Coping With Hearing Loss
Hearing loss doesn't have to isolate you and harm your quality of life. If you, a family member, a friend or a co-worker is struggling with hearing loss, try some of the following strategies for better communication:
  • Move closer to the person with whom you are speaking! In large groups, try to sit in the middle where you will be able to see and hear everyone better.

  • Stay away from noisy areas such as entranceways, windows, heating systems, or speakers--places that make it harder to hear in a conversation.

  • Try to stand face to face with the person with whom you are speaking. Facial cues and lip movements will help others understand your words. Taking lip reading classes can help you understand more of what is being said.

  • Ask people to speak simply and naturally. Fast or loud speech can be distracting and difficult to understand. Be willing to inform others of your hearing loss.

  • Use assistive listening and signaling products.

  • Use hearing aids—today's various styles are comfortable and can enhance the quality of your hearing.
